O&M is more than just Operations and Maintenance

As budgets across the federal space continue to shrink, demand continues to rise. Agencies are apt to ask: where can savings be found? How can we do more? At The Ambit Group, we recognize in many agencies that spending on operations and maintenance, or O&M, accounts for the majority of technology funding. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find an IT budget where 90 percent is taken up by O&M and only 10 percent is available for new software, systems and projects that can actually advance the mission. Our Telecom Practice Area is dedicated to identifying improvement opportunities within an agency’s O&M, often leading to dramatic savings.

A Proven, Flexible Methodology

In one recent project, Ambit helped an agency reduce its wireless management from 60,000 devices down to 24,000 – while still maintaining full operability. How? By applying Ambit’s proven methodology, such as consolidating contracts, increasing buying power, utilizing vendor delivery and installing biannual inventories. This saves immediate dollars, and lays the groundwork for agencies to meet new mandates like the Digital Government Strategy, emerging initiatives such as bring-your-own-device and moving towards a more flexible telecom infrastructure.
